The frequency of training/updating also varies according to the level of competences required.
In each three year period the requirements are;
- Level 1: Minimum of 2 hours
- Level 2: Minimum of 3-4 hours
- Level 3, core competences: Minimum of 6 hours
- Level 3, specialist knowledge and skills: Minimum of 12-16 hours
- Level 4: Minimum of 24 hours
- Level 5: Minimum of 24 hours
Those requiring competences at Levels 2 and above should also possess the competences at each of the preceding levels but only need to update the highest level they achieve.i
It is important to reiterate that this does not require hours of attendance at training events. It is the responsibility of the doctor, in their appraisal, to demonstrate they are competent and up to date. How this is done is up to the doctor in collaboration with their appraiser and can be done through a variety of the ways mentioned above.
For independent and private contractors there is also a requirement to “ensure that all health staff have access to appropriate safeguarding training, learning opportunities, and support to facilitate their understanding of the clinical aspects of child welfare and information sharing”.i This is particularly pertinent in Primary Care where training for all staff also has to be undertaken every three years. There is e-learning in Wales available free to all NHS staff including those working in Primary Care contracted services such as General Practice. There is a link on how to access this in the ‘Training Resources’ section.
